13 Questions With Scott Barradell

What, or who, inspired you to take up the game of golf?
My father.

What other sports did / do you play?
Basketball, tennis and cricket. Anything with a bat or ball.

What was the defining moment that you made you pursue a career in the golfing industry?
When I commenced my computer science degree at university and knew it definitely wasn’t for me.

What do you consider to be your greatest personal sporting achievement?
Winning the 2016 Victorian Golf Club Professional of the Year was a great honour. Any tournament or event win is always a fantastic moment and I have been lucky enough to win three club championships at an amateur level and a Pro Am as a professional.

What is your coaching philosophy?
Get the fundamentals right, work on your short game and don’t listen to the so-called experts such as your mates.

Who is your sporting hero?
I have a few – Michael Jordan and Roger Federer; and growing up, my hero was Greg Norman.

Who do you think is the greatest golfer the world has seen?
Male: Tiger Woods and Female: Annika Sorenstam

What is the greatest golfing moment you’ve ever witnessed?
Greg Norman’s two major championships –I would have loved to see him win a US Masters though.

If you could play any golf course in the world, what would it be and why?
Having watched the US Masters for the past 30 years – Augusta National for its beauty and rich history.

Which club do you think is the most underrated club by golfers?
Wedges – I get frustrated seeing golfers spend so much time focusing on their full swing hitting drivers, when it’s their short game that is the area most players need improvement in.

If you weren’t in the golfing industry, what would you be doing today?
It would have to be a job involving people, so any sales job would be good. I have also built two homes and enjoyed project managing those. I love golf though and the people you meet through it.

What is your favourite hole at The Eastern Golf Club & how do you play it?
Hole 3 – I love the elevation on the tee and letting go. The second shot is a tough one depending on the wind and flag location.

Walk or Cart?
There’s a time and a place for both.

Scott Barradell’s Story

I was always a sporty kid growing up, playing anything with a bat and a ball. I first played golf at the age of 12 and during my secondary school years, I would spend eight hours a day playing golf at Bacchus Marsh every school holiday period. On one day, as a 15-year-old, I played 90 holes, breaking 80 for every round. When I reached 16, I had to make a choice between cricket and golf and the decision was an easy one – I could play golf all year round and it’s a sport that can be enjoyed with others, or by yourself. I had always thought about becoming a school teacher so teaching golf was a perfect transition for me – I love the game, the constant challenge it presents me with as a player and I get great satisfaction working with others in the development of their own game.
